Slovenska Pristava Hall Renovation Project
Update - 10/26/05

Did you ever spend a great deal of time building something like a house of cards, only to have your kid brother, sister, a pet, or someone else knock it all down? Or were you ever the one that did the knocking-down? Perhaps you were just an innocent bystander watching? Demolition! Is it something sinister or primeval in us that causes us to be amazed at watching a demolition?

Perhaps you saw the picture on page 2 in last week's Ameriska Domovina. If you missed it and haven't heard already, the old hall at Slovenska Pristava has been completely torn down and removed. All of it - beams, blocks, windows, roof, gutters - all of it - gone. The concrete in and around the hall, bar area, washrooms, and kitchen has been removed. All that's left is bare soil. The bar (serving area) has been dismanted, but the bar storage area, kitchen and washrooms still remain, and Lobe Hall sits alone seperated from the rest. My most recent trip to Pristava had me driving down the road from the chapel, and as I saw the gap in the building, I had to assure my brain that my eyes were not playing tricks on me. That which I had come to expect as normal for so many years was no longer there, like a missing puzzle piece. It is truly an amazing sight and if you are out for a drive in the country to see the leaves changing colors, stop at Pristava to see for yourself.

After I had gotten out of my car and stared at the gap between the remaining buildings, I finally realized just how small and impersonal the old hall really was. It seemed so much bigger. A big thank you goes out to all the volunteers that helped with the demolition. Visit our website www.slovenskapristava.org to see some pictures.

Construction of the new hall will begin this week in earnest with excavation for the partial basement of the new hall. Tom and Joe Znidarsic of the Building Committee believe that the new hall will be under roof by Christmas - weather permitting.

We are still in great need of donations for this project. As of October 17th, we have received donations from 238 individuals (or groups) for a total of nearly $160,000. Those members (and friends) who have not yet made a pledge or donation are kindly asked to do so as soon as possible. We really need your help on this worthwhile project. Please do not delay any further. Please send your donations today to Slovenska Pristava, c/o Frank Zalar, 2886 Istra Lane, Willoughby Hills, OH 44092.

The following is a list of donataions received from September 12th to October 17th. We would like to thank the donors for their generosity. (Any additional pledged monies are not shown.)

To get involved, you can contact, via e-mail, Tom Stepec or Frank Zalar.

**Each member is asked to contribute what they can. Ideally, we are asking each member to pledge at least $500 over the next 2 years ($250 this year and $250 next year). Ground Breaking is scheduled for Fall of 2005, and 50% of the needed funds must be raised by then. Any help that you can provide is much appreciated!
